Marble Cliff council declines to join Columbus amicus brief, approves financial reports and routine business

Village Solicitor Yazan Ashrawi briefed council on a City of Columbus outreach seeking communities to join an amicus brief challenging the statutory "standing" requirement for taxpayer lawsuits. Ashrawi explained the current statute requires "standing" to file a lawsuit for alleged abuse of power or expenditures and that a lawsuit has been filed seeking to eliminate the proof requirement that the action serve the "public good." After discussion in which members indicated support for the concept but concern about unintended consequences, the council agreed to pass on joining Columbus' effort.

The council approved the Consent Agenda — which included approval of the minutes from June 16, 2025, and receipt of the June 2025 fire, police and permit reports — on a unanimous vote of the four members present. Fiscal Officer Stephanie A. Evans presented June 2025 financial reports with bank reconciliations and income tax receipts; Council Member Kendy A. Troiano moved to approve the financial reports and Council President Dow T. Voelker seconded; the motion passed unanimously.

Mayor Matthew P. Cincione updated council on First Community Church, saying no decisions have been made and that church leaders are engaging with the community to explore options. Assistant Fiscal Officer Peggy Shanahan announced a high school band concert in Falco Park on August 10 with Johnson's Ice Cream attending, an America 250 meeting on August 4, and suggested council begin planning for Marble Cliff's 125th anniversary in 2026. Council recorded no member reports and adjourned at 7:59 p.m.
