Council amends legal-services agreement, citing conflict with town's long-time attorney

The council voted to amend its agreement with Smith Hartvigsen to broaden the firm's representation of Charleston after the mayor cited conflict-of-interest concerns involving the town's long-time attorney.
At the June 4 meeting Mayor Doug Clements told the Charleston Town Council that the town's long-time attorney, Mark Smedley, had encountered situations that presented potential conflicts of interest because he also represents neighboring Heber. To reduce the town's exposure the council moved to expand its existing agreement with Smith Hartvigsen, a firm already engaged for land-use appeals and zoning matters, to cover additional legal needs.
Don Sant moved to amend the agreement; Jim Brown seconded. The motion carried.
Council minutes record that the amendment takes effect immediately and that Smith Hartvigsen will be available to handle a broader set of legal issues for Charleston.
