Sharon Conservation Commission outlines 2026 outreach, schedules regional vernal-pool training and education series

Bethany Sheffer said she and conservation commission chairs from Cornwall and Salisbury are developing a three-session program: an introductory session on vernal pools; training on how volunteers can monitor pools; and an on-site data-collection visit, most likely at Miles Sanctuary. The group scheduled a Zoom covering vernal pools and dark skies at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28; Chair Sheffer said she will circulate meeting details.
Under New Business members listed potential venues and events for the commission's presence in town: volunteer easement clearings, light-abatement programs, participation in the fine arts festival and summer concert series, a First Selectman's letter, a potential online newsletter or video resource, street-cleaning projects, Earth Day activities, and school outreach tied to scheduled events. Member Johannes VanDerTuin suggested future topics including bat monitoring and stone-wall mapping.
The commission also discussed an education series called "Heroes and Villains" on invasive and native plants, sponsored by Sharon Audubon, Sharon Land Trust and SEEC. When asked mid-production whether the commission could be named a sponsor, Chair Sheffer declined because there was no time to convene the commission; members later agreed the chair should have authority to associate the commission with similar time-sensitive educational initiatives at her judgment.
The commission adjourned at 7:45 p.m.; the minutes list the next meeting for Feb. 18 (the transcript lists 2025, which appears to be a clerical error and should be Feb. 18, 2026).
