County Manager said the general assembly "allocated about $3.2 million to Burke County for a housing inducement fund," and that the proposed agreement would "leverage that by providing municipal grants to communities where housing is probable or there's an active project." He added the draft agreement would include a performance contract obligating repayment of public funds "if vertical development and tax based housing isn't created."
The manager said the town has already received two grants and identified the parcel as platted for roughly 140 homes. Commissioners asked clarifying questions about the schedule for additional materials and technical revisions the county attorney and manager were still working through. Staff said they will present a fuller briefing and the recommended agreement at the next meeting in two weeks.
Next steps: No funding decision was made on April 6; the interlocal agreement and any related appropriation will return to the board for formal action after staff provides the detailed performance contract and technical revisions.
