City staff gave several project updates during the Redevelopment Commission meeting on May 4.
Mayor Pete Land said the city met with American Structurepoint and that the roundabout design for 113th Avenue and US‑231 is complete; the team is now addressing utilities and coordination with INDOT and the Friends of the Veterans Memorial Parkway for any central feature. "construction still set for spring of 2027," Mayor Land said when discussing the schedule.
On the bike-trail project, Land said engineering is underway for a route that will follow Mississippi Avenue and go west under I‑65. He said the city retained Next Level Trails funds for the project and is pushing to open the trail by this fall.
Land also reported paving work is underway: municipal lots between West Street and Court Street have been paved, and work is beginning on the north end of town and on Arrowhead Court. He said the Redevelopment Commission has $500,000 in its 2026 budget for paving, and the city secured nearly $1 million from a Community Crossing Grant after a successful reapplication.
Commissioners discussed trail connectivity and wetlands constraints, with Land noting that extending the trail through White Hawk would be costly due to wetlands and that community support was limited. Andrew Kyres said Merrillville is seeking a grant to extend a neighboring segment to Erie Lackawanna.
The meeting also included routine approvals (minutes and invoices) and adjourned at 5:18 p.m.
