Commissioners reported the outcomes of a recent North Central regional health summit, where dozens of participants across multiple work sessions identified a set of priorities aimed at stemming rural health‑care decline and improving access.
According to the commissioners’ briefing, each summit work session was asked to identify its top three priorities. The compiled results elevated several crosscutting goals: exploring alternate payment models for rural health providers, protecting and removing barriers to funding for critical‑access hospitals and federally qualified health centers, and developing new sustainable models for family‑friendly and women’s health services, including the feasibility of birthing centers and related regulatory pathways.
The sessions also prioritized expanding telemedicine and mobile outreach, building EMS educational capacity and pursuing state and federal reimbursement reform (participants cited House Bill 1152 as relevant to EMS reimbursement), and creating financial incentives and educational pathways to recruit and retain rural health workers. Commissioners said work groups are developing next steps and that regional coordination (North Central) may serve as the ongoing convening body.
Commissioners framed the summit outcomes as a foundation for future advocacy and policy work, including discussions with state and federal partners to steer funding toward locally managed programs and capacity building.
