Commissioners heard updates on brownfields cleanup and local economic-development work.
Commissioner Josh reported a brownfields meeting in which the Fourth Street School hazardous-materials assessment was finished and documentation of findings was provided. Josh said some industrial sites have already received environmental cleanup and that a reuse plan for the Overlook property is being developed with input from a landscape architect.
Commissioners discussed EDA grant opportunities and noted national funding the EDA has set aside for economic development; Josh said roughly $1 billion is available at a national level and the county continues to consider how best to pursue those dollars locally.
Commissioner James told the board an estimated full demolition and removal of asbestos and other toxic materials at the forestry school would cost approximately $470,000, while rehabilitation that leaves asbestos tiles covered would be significantly less. James said the brownfields work includes creating a visibility index to map vacancy and abandonment and to identify market potential.
Officials said these studies are intended to support reuse planning and potential grant applications; no formal grant award decisions were made at the meeting.
