Cameron County commissioners set review period, report budget shortfall plan and treasurer’s numbers

The Cameron County Commissioners said the county budget will be available for public review next Wednesday and that a special meeting is scheduled Dec. 30 to adopt the budget after the 30-day review period.
Commissioners emphasized public access to the draft and invited residents to submit questions or comments; department heads reviewed the proposed 2026 meeting and holiday schedules that the board also approved.
In a treasurer’s update, officials reported a recent $400,000 deposit to the general fund and said only $100,000 of reserves were used to cover a recent shortfall. The treasurer reported October expenses totaling $161,188.77.
Commissioners discussed courthouse security upgrades tied to an upcoming bid for a new single-point entrance that will include handicap accessibility. They said engineering and architecture work is ongoing and that bids will be sought so the county can plan vendor selection and any temporary closure of the main entrance during construction.
The board set its next regular meeting for Thursday, Dec. 4 at 11 a.m. and noted a separate emergency salary-board meeting and an emergency retirement-board meeting for Dec. 4 (salary board at 9:30 a.m.; retirement board at 1 p.m.) to address a conservation district salary request and actuary recommendations for the retirement system.
The commission adjourned at 11:35 a.m.
