The Town Board on April 15 adopted two committee resolutions calling for public hearings on separate items.
First, the board approved a resolution endorsing the proposed Choconut Water District Dissolution Plan and set a public hearing for May 20, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. to take comment on the dissolution plan and the proposed acquisition of the district by the Village of Johnson City. The resolution was filed and adopted as prepared by the Environmental/Laws & Legislation committee (Res. by Joseph P. Nirchi Sr., seconded by Thomas R. Augostini; recorded vote: all yes).
Second, the board adopted a resolution calling a public hearing on May 6, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. to consider a proposed local law to amend the Town Code by adding Chapter 10, “Attorney, Town,” which would set residency requirements for the Town Attorney and Deputy Town Attorneys. That resolution was similarly filed by committee and adopted unanimously.
Why it matters: The Choconut dissolution hearing will determine whether the water district is dissolved and whether the Village of Johnson City will acquire the district, a change that could affect service arrangements for customers in the district. The residency local-law hearing concerns qualification rules for the town’s chief legal officers and could affect hiring and retention of the Town Attorney and deputies.
Next steps: Public hearings will be held on the dates set; the board took no final action on either item at the April 15 meeting.
