Stormmont Event Center gets approval for Wi‑Fi upgrades; commission authorizes chair RFP

Stormmont Event Center staff asked the commission on Jan. 12 to approve an upgrade of Wi‑Fi infrastructure in Exhibition Hall and to begin an RFP for replacement portable chairs for Landon Arena and Exhibition Hall.
Director of operations Matt Rockers said the upgrade will increase campus speeds and capacity (moving from 1 gig to 10 gig) to better support events that create large concurrent network demand, citing recent tournaments that strained the existing system. The commission approved the sole‑source purchase to expand Wi‑Fi capability.
Stormmont staff also asked to start an RFP for portable chair replacement funded through 2026 CIP capital outlay, with funding not to exceed $350,000 after staff consolidation reduced the original cost estimate of roughly $537,000. Commissioners approved proceeding with the RFP. Staff later recapped that a recent volleyball tournament used 11 courts and drew roughly 85 teams and about 3,000 spectators over the weekend.
