County reads first resolution to exchange Boswell Park and Central Park athletic property with USD 501

Ashley Beagert of the County Counselor's Office presented a first reading of joint resolution R2026007 proposing the exchange of Boswell Park and the Central Park track and football field between USD 501 and Shawnee County.
Under the proposed transaction, Boswell Park would become county property and USD 501 would assume ownership of the Central Park track and football field. The agreement includes exclusive weekday use of two gymnasiums at Central Park by USD 501 during the school year (specified hours Monday through Friday) in return for USD 501 paying 50% of major maintenance costs to the gym structures and systems. No monetary exchange is part of the transfer, Beagert said.
Because the original merger agreement requires offering such conveyed property to the City of Topeka first, Beagert said the city was offered the property and declined; the county will publish required notices in the official newspaper for two consecutive weeks and anticipates final action at its Jan. 26 meeting.
