Sheriff presents public-safety data; residents urge traffic and property enforcement

Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar and Captain Ben Harting presented public-safety data to Town of Union residents during the board meeting on May 6 and distributed booklets summarizing the information and recent sheriff’s office implementations.
The presentation preceded public comments in which several residents raised local safety concerns. Ryan Manger of Ivon Ave reported a large pothole at the end of Ivon Ave and Arnold Drive; Supervisor Robert Mack said he would contact the Commissioner of Public Works to inspect the location.
Joe Fergeson of Hoover Ave reported that a house on his street has 'within the last year now looks like a junk yard' and said neighbors are concerned. Town Attorney Alan Pope advised that the board has authorized the town attorneys to seek relief in Supreme Court, which could order the owner to clean up the property or allow the town to perform the cleanup and place an enforcement lien against the parcel.
Ashley Coyle of Matthews Dr recounted a near-miss: '2 children almost were hit by a speeding car' near a crosswalk on Royal Road by Homer Brink. She asked for reduced speed-limit signs, flashing lights at the crosswalk, a crossing guard and high-visibility road paint, and also requested additional reduced speed signs on Pruyne Street nearer the school. Supervisor Mack said he would send the Commissioner of Public Works and the Highway Superintendent to review the locations and noted that the town currently has no applicants for a crossing-guard position.
Broome County Clerk Aaron Martin also addressed the meeting to explain county clerk services, including operation of two DMV offices (Endicott and Binghamton), recording and digitization of documents, and upcoming passport fairs; he provided an online records portal reference.
The minutes record referrals to the Commissioner of Public Works for road and crossing safety reviews and legal action underway on the property maintenance complaint; no vote was taken on the resident requests during the meeting.
