Shawnee County Public Works told commissioners on Nov. 24 it will issue a request for qualifications for design and construction engineering services for a bridge replacement on NW 78th Street over Half Day Creek. Director Curtney House said the existing structure has a sufficiency rating of 38 out of 100 and is due for replacement; commissioners approved issuing the RFQ by voice vote, 3‑0.
House also briefed the board on several road projects. He reported that the 29th/Auburn roundabout (accessing a new middle school complex) should open before Thanksgiving. By contrast, the Northwest 46th Street project is behind schedule and could be delayed until mid‑December while crews finish bridge work and allow the deck to cure. Mark Bettis of Bettis Asphalt told commissioners the contractor scheduled the road to open Dec. 4–5 pending deck curing; he said the remainder of the work is largely complete. Commissioners discussed the possibility of liquidated damages and confirmed the final phase will be completed under traffic to avoid a second full closure.
House also described a separate Bington project (culvert replacements and limited road improvements) that will start in early January; staff said the work began as culvert replacements but includes road upgrades intended to improve school‑related traffic flow. No formal votes were required for the schedule updates.
What’s next: Public Works will issue the RFQ for the NW 78th bridge and return with progress updates and, where applicable, contract recommendations for engineering services.
