Shawnee County adopts Vision Zero resolution, eyes comprehensive safety action plan

The Shawnee County Board of County Commissioners on Nov. 24 adopted Resolution No. 2025‑99, approving a Vision Zero policy and a comprehensive safety action plan developed with federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant funding.
Curtney House, Director of Public Works, told commissioners the plan is nearly complete and that one condition of the grant requires formal adoption of a county policy with two stated goals: to strive for zero fatalities and serious‑injury crashes on the county road system by 2055, and to adopt the comprehensive safety action plan. House said the plan is intended to guide investments and safety improvements and offered to present a fuller briefing at an upcoming Thursday meeting.
Commissioners asked for a more detailed presentation on steps and timelines. House responded that the county anticipates technological and medical advances over the next three decades but said local highway design, emergency response and vehicle technology improvements all support the Vision Zero goal. The board approved the resolution by voice vote, 3‑0.
What’s next: staff will provide an expanded presentation at a follow‑up meeting showing implementation steps and timelines for prioritized safety actions.
