Justin Landon, Shawnee County director of facilities management, told commissioners on Nov. 13 that his department has made "strong progress" over the past four months repairing and modernizing county buildings.
"One of the biggest accomplishments was the HVAC at the Mayor Conference Center — nearly all systems have been resolved," Landon said, adding that work on a boiler loop began yesterday and the new system will provide redundancy so "any issues in the future we will always have a backup ready to go." He also said the courthouse roof replacement is complete and will provide long-term protection and lower maintenance costs.
Landon said crews corrected elevator violations identified during an inspection, including adding emergency stops and covers for pit sump pumps, and improving lighting in shafts to meet updated regulations. He described those fixes as "fairly simple" but necessary to bring the systems into compliance.
The JP Lewis Health Department received HVAC repairs and has a front-door replacement underway; the elections office had surge protection and heat-exchanger work completed, but Landon warned the elections elevator is outdated and parts are expensive and hard to find. Landon said staff have discussed more affordable repair options with elections staff and will coordinate further with them.
Commissioners pressed Landon on near-term priorities and the JP Lewis flooring project, which he said is currently planned for next year's Capital Improvement Plan. Landon emphasized shifting the department from reactive repairs to preventive maintenance and said the custodial team is now fully staffed, improving service and response times.
The director said the department is also pursuing cost-savings initiatives and evaluating opportunities to improve system reliability across county facilities. He concluded by offering to answer further questions and coordinate with other offices on outstanding items.
The commission moved on to the next agenda item without taking formal action on facilities items.
