Waynetown to fund fireworks and parade prizes; council clarifies one-time vs. annual fire department payment

The Waynetown Town Council discussed several community-event funding items and clarified the town's approach to donations at its May 13 meeting.
Fire Chief Phil Pirtle said the $5,000 contract Sandy provided reflected the department's intent to use the money to pay volunteer firefighters per run and that the fire department had hoped for an annual commitment. Council members said they understood the intent but stated the contract before the council is a one-time payment and that any future annual donations would require separate council approval. Councilmember Doug Harris asked that donations be tracked to ensure funds are spent for the stated purpose rather than simply deposited into a general fund; Pirtle said the money would be used to pay volunteers for each run.
Separately, Bob Cox reported the local merchants reversed an earlier decision and will provide $1,000 toward the town's fireworks display, which Cox said will increase the show's intensity though not its duration. Cox also said a volunteer, Kari Whitney, agreed to organize a parade during the Freedom Festival on June 27, and Cox proposed a $250 town donation to create five $50 random-drawing prizes for parade participants; he said town staff and volunteers will cover logistics.
Council did not formalize additional ongoing commitments during the meeting; members said future requests for recurring funding would return to the agenda for review.
