Byron council hears comprehensive-plan timeline, OKs GEFA loan modification request and annexation of city land

At the May 10 meeting the council heard a five-year comprehensive plan update from Middle Georgia Regional Commission staff, authorized submission of a GEFA loan modification request for sewer rehab, approved annexation of city-owned property and adopted several administrative items including a scrap tire reimbursement program.
Representatives from the Middle Georgia Regional Commission presented the required comprehensive plan update and told the council the planning timeline will run from May through January, with final adoption expected in January. Mayor Michael Chidester offered the municipal complex as a local meeting venue for public sessions tied to the update.
Separately, the council authorized staff to submit a modification request to the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority (GEFA) for CWSRF Loan Number CW2016048 to support further sanitary sewer rehabilitation work. The motion to approve submission of the GEFA modification request was made by Council Member Chris Hodges and seconded by Council Member Rusty Adams; recorded as unanimous.
The council also approved annexing property already owned by the City of Byron that lies outside current corporate limits, and directed staff to obtain a Peach County Board of Commissioners resolution agreeing to the annexation as required by state law. The motion was made by Michael Chumbley and seconded by Chris Hodges and carried unanimously.
Other business approved included authorizing an agreement with Macon Occupational Medicine for breath alcohol and drug screening services; adopting a personnel policy granting paid time off for employee birthdays; ratifying a recently installed air-conditioning unit for municipal offices; and approving removal of two damaged trees at the municipal complex. When questions arose about pricing in a proposed renewal with JaniKing janitorial services, the council rescinded the renewal motion and tabled the item until the next meeting.
Council also approved participation in the state's Scrap Tire Abatement Reimbursement Program, which reimburses disposal costs for used tires. The meeting adjourned at 6:35 p.m.
