The Lake Charles City Council approved a cooperative endeavor agreement with the local school board to repair an eroding drainage corridor at the west end of McNe Street near the tennis courts.
Councilmember Viso, who addressed the project, described the work as a significant erosion-repair and drainage reconstruction effort and said the engineer’s estimate is about $600,000. "I think it's estimated around a $600,000 project. School board is going to pick up an estimated half the cost, $300,000," Viso said.
Staff described the repair as replacing the eroding ditch with culverts and filling/closing the trench to stop ongoing erosion and preserve adjacent parking and the school’s tennis facilities. The council accepted the cooperative agreement and authorized moving forward with design and procurement steps.
The agreement directs the public works department and relevant engineering consultants to finalize plans, account for utilities that currently lie in the channel, and seek any required easements or permits. Councilmembers requested staff monitor similar recent repairs in nearby jurisdictions to help inform materials and construction methods.
Next steps: engineering design and bidding, with implementation timing to follow the design and permitting process.
