Council endorses Louisville schools renewal levy after public comment

The Louisville City Council voted to adopt resolution 26-28 endorsing the Lewisville City Schools renewal levy (Issue 3) on the May 5 ballot.
Mark Sigler, representing the Lewisville Levy Committee, delivered a five-minute public comment urging support for the renewal and emphasizing it requests no new money. “The renewal is not asking for new money...this particular levy raises $2,560,000. It’s going to continue to raise $2.56 million. It cannot by law increase,” Sigler said, noting the levy is designed to maintain existing funding.
Sigler cited state reporting (the CUPP report) to place the district’s spending and administrative costs in context and argued local dollars stay in the community. Council members thanked Sigler for the information and confirmed a public informational meeting would be held the next evening at the middle school auditorium.
When council voted on the resolution, Mallister Atkins announced an abstention because she is employed by the Louisville City Schools; the other members voted yes and the resolution passed. The resolution is an endorsement and does not alter taxes; Sigler and council members reiterated that the measure is a renewal, not a new levy.
Staff and council encouraged residents to attend the informational meeting at the middle school (1300 South Chapel) the following night for more details from the district and the auditor.
