Council backs school-led utility-box art and local America 250 kickoff plans

Staff said schools will be invited to design artwork for select utility boxes and proposed theme options such as patriotic, Louisville Leopard, umbrella alley, abstract and botanical motifs; staff will work with schools and return artwork proposals to council for approval. Council members suggested geographic theming—Americana near the stadium, umbrella-alley motifs downtown, and nature themes near parks—and recommended involving the parks commission for additional input on sites and design appropriateness.
On events, staff said Visit Canton provided grant money that funded revolutionary-era flags and may help pay for decorative lighting; the city plans to center its America 250 celebrations on the second Friday in June to avoid competing with July 4 events and to maximize downtown attendance. Staff also announced a May 27 alley kickoff from 4–6 p.m. and said chamber events will carry America 250 themes.
Councilors and volunteers noted former mayor Cynthia Kersner’s leadership on Second Fridays and discussed coordinating bands and other attractions for the downtown celebration. Staff will return with final art proposals and event scheduling details for council approval.
