The Lewisville City Council voted March 16 to create a downtown community entertainment district under revised code 43012.80, a move city staff said would allow the city to apply to the state for eight additional liquor permits in the defined downtown area.
Staff described the action as the final local step before a state application. "It will give opportunity for businesses that want to locate in the district ... to get a liquor permit. Eight will become available in the district," a staff member said, noting the licenses would be awarded through the liquor department process and are intended to remove a barrier to downtown restaurant recruitment.
Council members said the district has been discussed at prior meetings and moved the resolution forward that night. The vote was unanimous. Staff said an application to the state would follow and that the liquor department would retain authority over license approvals.
