Amityville Board of Trustees approves routine payments, grants and $21,082.47 drone purchase

The Amityville Board of Trustees met Jan. 27 and unanimously approved a series of routine licenses, vendor payments and authorizations including a $21,082.47 purchase of a Skydio drone and two grant-application agreements to seek state funding for parks and playground refurbishment.
Mayor Michael O’Neill opened the meeting at 9:00 a.m., credited the Department of Public Works for clearing recent snow and announced that the Village had again earned Tree City USA status, thanking the Parks Commission and DPW for tree maintenance. Deputy Mayor Owen Brooks outlined several upcoming community events, including a Feb. 1 brunch, the Amityville Kiwanis spring social on March 1 and Little League sign-ups Feb. 28.
The Board moved through its consent and business agenda with unanimous votes (4–0) on items that included approving minutes from Jan. 12, accepting a waiver and adding Josiah Antoine to the Amityville Fire Department juniors, renewing multiple landscaper licenses, and issuing a carting license to Millennium Container Service, Inc.
Finance and routine contract approvals included authorizing payment for employee dental and vision benefits to CSEA ($5,986.97); annual hosting to Edmunds GovTech ($4,724.43); a fourth-quarter NYS unemployment reimbursement ($7,740.38); monthly billing to Sourcepass Total, LLC ($4,298.92); a 50% deposit to Bayport Flower Houses for hanging baskets ($3,606.63); and payment to the Suffolk County Water Authority for 272 public hydrant rentals ($23,808.16). The Board also approved a payment to Gabrielli Truck Sales for hydrant parts totaling $5,207.32 and the annual copy machine lease payment of $3,026.00.
The Board authorized the Mayor to sign two separate agreements with Millennium Strategies to prepare and submit grant applications: one for the New York Places NY PLAYS FY26 program for a $3,300 flat fee and one for the NYS Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation MPR Grant Program FY26 for a $3,500 flat fee; Mayor O’Neill said the submissions are intended to help refurbish fields and playgrounds.
Public safety and operations items approved included several Amityville Police Department training sessions (CPR/defibrillator recertification and range/firearms safety classroom dates) and the purchase of a Skydio drone for $21,082.47. The Amityville Fire Department was granted permission to hold an Easter Egg Hunt in Peterkin Park on April 5, 2026, and the Board designated May 2, 2026, for a street dedication of Oldfield Avenue in memory of Ex-Chief George M. Lang III.
Two residents—Wendy Canastro of 45 Wood Ave. and Joan Donnison of 175 S. Ketcham Ave.—spoke during public comment; the minutes record their attendance but do not provide details of their remarks. The meeting adjourned at 9:15 a.m.
