Residents press council on illegal dumping and budget transparency; chairman pledges oversight

Residents and council members used the communications portion of the May 26 meeting to press the City of Monroe for stronger enforcement on illegal dumping and clearer budget oversight.
Councilmember Ms. Woods highlighted persistent illegal dumping and large storm-debris piles in District 3 and thanked Public Works crews for cleanup work while asking whether heavy-duty equipment could remove a large branch. Mr. Toliver responded that specialized heavy-duty equipment would need to be subcontracted for such removals. Mr. Muhammad urged stronger enforcement to identify and hold accountable those who illegally dump and warned that unattended storm debris could compound flooding concerns.
Mr. Muhammad also referenced a District 5 Housing Authority project and said roughly $6 million had been invested, calling for transparency and suggesting budget amendments should clearly specify funding sources and long-term impacts. Chairman Rodney McFarland echoed calls for improved transparency on late agenda items and past allocations, referencing a previously discussed $100,000 SEED allocation and stating the council would seek timely communication and independent legal review when necessary.
Chairman McFarland announced the council’s next meeting for June 9 at 4:00 p.m. and adjourned the session at 7:17 p.m.
