Mayor thanks firefighters after weekend house fires, urges residents to clear hydrants

Mayor Michael O’Neill opened the Board of Trustees meeting by thanking the Amityville Fire Department and neighboring departments for mutual aid after two house fires over the weekend and saying the homeowners were able to get out safely. He credited the Building Inspector, Fire Marshal and the Department of Public Works for on‑scene support.
"Fortunately, the homeowners were able to get out safely," Mayor Michael O’Neill said, and he called the response a village effort that showed the community "came together for their neighbors." He asked APD Chief Frank Caramanica to lead the Pledge of Allegiance before business items began.
O’Neill used the moment to remind residents to clear snow and ice from fire hydrants in front of their properties to ensure access for emergency crews. Deputy Mayor Owen Brooks then outlined a slate of upcoming community events and volunteer opportunities, including an invasive species cleanup at Delano Preserve and local health and social events posted on the village website calendar.
No formal actions tied to the fires were taken at the meeting; the board proceeded to routine agenda items and adjourned at 7:13 p.m.
