The council approved a part-time EMT hire and reviewed public-safety reports during its Sept. 3 session.
EMS Chief Bruce Silcott reported $208,298.50 in billing for the year, $49,557 in income and $42,846 in Medicare adjustments. He said the department handled 59 calls in August and 10 so far this month, and that they received a $5,500 grant but did not receive the hardship grant. Silcott told the council that seven new EMTs will start class on Monday and three EMTs will attend advanced class Tuesday. He asked the mayor to recommend hiring part-time EMT Devin Johnson; Mayor Michael Barth recommended Johnson, and Ron Beverly moved to approve the hire. Toni Egly seconded the motion and the council voted to approve the hire unanimously.
Police Chief Mark Denning reported that part-time officer Zackary Miller resigned and that he will advertise for one full-time officer; Denning also noted parking complaints on East Cornelia that appear to stem from a dispute between two neighbors. Fire/EMS Chief Darrick Crochran reported the department is arranging additional fire-burning training ($300 per person) and that nine personnel passed the last class while two are retesting.
Why it matters: the approved hire increases EMS staffing capacity, the billing and call-volume figures provide context for service demand, and the police and fire updates identify near-term staffing and training needs.
The council’s approval of part-time EMT Devin Johnson was recorded in the minutes; EMS unit 511 was reported back in service as the primary vehicle, and the old 511 was listed for sale on GovDeals.
