Hills Township discusses new fire station ballot measure and tanker replacement

Hills Township members met June 24 and heard plans from Mayor Tim Kemp and Maintenance/Fire Chief Pantel about a proposed new fire station and equipment needs.
Mayor Tim Kemp outlined hopes to place a proposal for a new fire station on the fall ballot for residents to decide. Pantel reported the fire department responded to calls during the year, said the department roster stands at 18 members, and described efforts to acquire a rural tanker that responds on rural calls. Pantel said a replacement tanker would likely take about two years to obtain and estimated the cost at roughly $500,000; combined reserves from the Fire Association and the City total about $265,000 toward that purchase.
Officials also discussed training policies (the department reimburses personnel after a set service period) and the LOSAP trustee briefing that City Administrator Adriane Sedlacek provided on benefits for eligible volunteers. Sedlacek noted uncertainty over whether a proposed 55+ retirement trailer park off Dane Road would fall inside the township or be annexed into the City.
Participants reviewed apparatus ages: the tanker on the roster is a 1996 model and the oldest pumper dates to 1991. The Township meeting concluded after a motion by Hudachek and a second from Jackson Willette; the motion carried and the meeting adjourned at 6:52 PM.
