Storey County directs study of electric utility resources and to engage on regional transportation priorities

The Storey County Board of County Commissioners on May 5 directed county staff and the government affairs team to evaluate available and potential public and private electric utility resources, infrastructure and governance and to develop recommendations to enhance short- and long-term energy availability and sustainability for industries, businesses and residents in northern Nevada.
Commissioner Clay Mitchell said NV Energy’s filings guide development and influence rates and said the company has identified protecting current residents as a priority. The board approved the direction to evaluate energy resources and to coordinate with local, regional and state leaders; the motion passed unanimously. During public comment, Will Adler of Silver State Government Relations said the Greenlink transmission project is forthcoming and urged the county to meet with state officials to understand priorities and timing.
Separately, the board directed staff and its government affairs team to respond to a U.S. Secretary of Transportation letter dated April 20, 2026, known as the 'Right to Drive Initiative,' and to engage in regional highway and transportation initiatives affecting Storey County. County Manager Austin Osborne said NDOT has asked counties to compile lists of priority road projects; the county identified the Northeast connector and I‑80 projects as top priorities. The transportation motion also carried on a 3–0 vote.
The motions were made by Commissioner Mitchell and seconded by Commissioner Gilman. The directive sets a planning and advocacy process rather than approving specific projects or funding at this stage.
