Rothschild resident raises concerns about Kelly Avenue trail; board tables decision

During public comment at the June 23 Village Board meeting, Lisa and Rich Seefeldt of 214 Jones Drive told the board they had not received notice about a proposed walking trail between Wood Street and Jones Drive and said the trail would negatively affect the parcel owners’ potential for a roadway for future development.
Administrator Ryan VanDeWalle and the Department of Public Works presented maps showing the area of Kelly Avenue under consideration for a trail connection to the Volkman trail. VanDeWalle said some tree removal would be required and framed the project as part of an ongoing effort to improve trail connectivity and provide safer pedestrian routes near schools.
Board members asked staff to notify all parcel owners abutting the right-of-way about the potential development and requested a comprehensive trail maintenance plan that would include timelines for maintenance and repairs. Trustee Deb Ehster moved and Trustee Bill Schremp seconded a motion to table the Kelly Avenue Public Right-of-Way trail project so staff could obtain additional information and return to the board before fall 2025; the motion carried 6-0.
Next steps: staff will notify abutting parcel owners and prepare a trail maintenance plan; the board will revisit the proposal before fall 2025.
