Residents ask Rothschild to allow backyard chickens, board takes no action

Randall Connors of 7117 Sylvan Street asked the Village of Rothschild to change an ordinance that currently prohibits backyard chickens, telling the board that his neighbors have not complained and that “chickens do not stink.” His wife, Lori Connors, said she was unaware the village forbids chickens and described an educational project the family ran after receiving a $250 educational grant last year: children participated in hatching the birds, roosters were removed, and the family documented the process. She also described a neighborhood survey that showed largely positive responses to the experiment and said the birds are tame and that children “bond well with the chickens.”
Administrator Ryan VanDeWalle and trustees did not move to change the ordinance at the meeting. The request was recorded during the public‑comment portion of the May 12 agenda; no formal referral, ordinance amendment, or vote on the subject was taken that night.
