Residents urge council to address ICE operations and sanctuary-jurisdiction concerns during public comment

At Monday’s meeting several residents used the public-comment period to press the council on immigration enforcement and community safety.
Robert Vivar told the council he had witnessed an abduction and a shooting near a bus stop and alleged that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) operations were occurring in the community without due process. He urged the council to act, saying inaction amounts to complicity, and asked officials to place the issue on the agenda for formal consideration.
Another commenter, Lori Masons, spoke on sanctuary jurisdictions and expressed concern about local policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Masons asserted that California began offering certain medical benefits to undocumented residents around 2024 and cited an estimated statewide cost figure; she urged enforcement of federal immigration laws and stronger support for law enforcement.
City staff did not take immediate action on these public comments during the meeting. The issues raised involve state and federal law and, if council members choose to pursue policy responses, would likely require legal review and staff reports before any local policy changes could be considered.
