Mayor Leon and the Ontario City Council formally recognized Police Chief Mike Lorenz on the dais for 28 years of service, presenting a certificate of appreciation and reading a Congressional recognition into the record. Anthony Marino, a district representative for state Senator Susan Rubio, delivered a certificate of recognition on the senator’s behalf, and multiple council members offered tributes.
"On behalf of the city council and our community, Chief Lorenz, we extend our sincere gratitude for your leadership and your service," Mayor Leon said during the ceremony. Councilmembers praised Lorenz’s leadership style and the department culture he fostered.
Chief Lorenz, who began his career in 1998 and was sworn in as chief on Sept. 15, 2020, addressed the council and audience, calling the tribute "very humbling" and thanking colleagues, family and partners across San Bernardino County. "I could lead all day long, but if you weren't willing to take direction, then we never would be the best," he said, describing an organization of about 450 employees and a budget above $130 million.
Jason Anderson, representing the district attorney’s office, and a range of public-safety partners attended and spoke in support. A city certificate and a Congressional reading (submitted by Congresswoman Norma Torres) were placed in the record and presented to Lorenz.
Councilmembers announced there will be refreshments and photos following the presentation and noted that Deputy Chief Rudy Lopez will assume the chief role; the formal swearing-in is scheduled for the next council meeting. "We wish you all the best in your well-deserved retirement," Mayor Leon said.
The council recessed briefly after the ceremony and then resumed the business portion of the meeting.
