Lancaster County approves bridge match agreement to address poor-rated bridges

Lancaster County Engineer Pam Dingman told the board that "Bridge X84 is one of five bridges on our system that are rated poor," and said the work — together with a separate project currently under construction at bridge G222 — will substantially reduce the county's poor-rated bridges. Dingman said the county had reduced the number of poor-rated bridges dramatically over the past decade and praised staff and local consultants for their work.
Dingman also described C-262 as a candidate for removal rather than replacement: "We're removing a bridge from the system. It would help of course if we had less bridges to maintain... provide access to the citizens without having a million-dollar bridge." Commissioners cast unanimous votes to approve the resolution.
The board also approved a companion item listed on the agenda as the project cost authorization for X84/C-262; the transcript records the amount in an unclear numeric format. The agenda language read the estimated total project cost in a way that was transcribed as "1,29,500," which could not be verified from the record presented at the meeting.
The resolution uses state bridge-match funding to cover a portion of construction costs; Dingman said the county has participated in the program multiple times. The projects are part of a multi-year infrastructure refresh county officials said has reduced the inventory of poor-rated bridges from dozens to only a handful over recent years.
The board approved the resolution and the related project authorization on roll call. The chair will sign the state agreement as authorized by the board.
What’s next: projects will proceed under the county’s agreement with the Nebraska Department of Transportation and follow normal construction procurement and scheduling processes.
