State awards contracts to rebuild three century-old East End railroad bridges

State officials have awarded contracts to rebuild three century-old railroad bridges on the East End, Assemblyman Tommy John Skevone reported.
Skevone said the Sag Road Bridge in Sagaponack, the Cranberry Hole Road Bridge in Amagansett and the River Avenue Bridge in Eastport — all primarily timber structures more than 100 years old — will be reconstructed. The state told the broadcast that, despite maintenance and temporary fixes, the bridges had been "further compromised by large overweight vehicles traveling against posted weight limit restrictions." Work is scheduled to begin at the end of 2026 and to continue into early 2027.
Two of the bridges (Cranberry Hole Road and River Avenue) have been closed to traffic for years, the report said. The segment did not include engineering specifications, contract values, or a construction timeline beyond an estimated start and early-2027 work window.
