The Deep River Community Health Committee met Feb. 3 at Richard H. Smith Deep River Town Hall and was called to order at 7:01 p.m. by Chairperson Lori Gregan. Members present included Secretary Emily Chase and committee members Betsy Scholfield, Joyce Berardis, Nancy McGee, Kelsey Sneed and Lauren Nichols.
The committee accepted the minutes as read. Nancy McGee moved to approve the minutes and Lauren Nichols seconded; Joyce Berardis recorded an abstention. The treasurer then presented the committee's accounts and recent activity. The checking account balance was reported at $11,024.55, down $4,819.11 since Jan. 6; the money market balance was $152,906.99 at an interest rate of 3.75 percent, up $10,482.65 since Jan. 6 following a $10,000 transfer from checking on Jan. 7. The committee reported total funds of $163,931.54, an increase of $5,666.54 since Jan. 6.
January expenses were listed as $2,484.30 and included three oil deliveries, an Eversource bill, a pharmacy bill, a Connecticut Water bill and $231.67 for backpack supplies. Year-to-date expenses were reported at $14,305.31; January revenue was $922.55. Joyce Berardis moved to accept the treasurer's report and Lauren Nichols seconded the motion.
On program activity, the Backpack Program was reported to have 22 backpacks in circulation, up from 14 the prior year. Committee members discussed balancing cost against ease for families. Nancy McGee will draft a new outreach letter in English, Spanish and Portuguese to be included in backpack deliveries, with a self-addressed envelope for replies to help the committee better understand program participants.
Committee members described logistics for the Adams donation box: Lori Gregan typically picks up donations on Mondays and Emily Chase on Thursdays; if the box is full items will be dropped at the Tri-Town Youth building or members will notify the committee. Members assigned to weekly backpack duty will also check the donation box.
The food pantry was reported as well stocked as the committee prepares for the March "Jams for Cans" event. Members discussed ensuring CHC signage at the event and confirmed member participation in planning and staffing.
The committee noted it has a one-year vacancy. The next meeting is scheduled for March 3, 2026. At 8:01 p.m. Kelsey Sneed moved to adjourn and Nancy McGee seconded; the meeting closed. The minutes were signed "Respectfully submitted" by Emily Chase.
The meeting included routine procedural actions and program planning; no formal ordinance or external authority was referenced and no contentious exchanges were recorded.
