Parks staff told the commission the city attorney has approved an amendment to the longstanding lease with the Chico Rod and Gun Club that would remove a prevailing-wage provision for work the club pays for itself.
Staff said the change is limited to lease language and applies only to improvements paid for entirely by the club; no public funds are being committed. “When the lease was written there’s this prevailing wage provision that really probably didn’t need to be in there,” a parks manager said. The city attorney reviewed the amendment and staff said the item will proceed to council as an informational item and then for formal action.
Why it matters: removing a prevailing-wage clause can lower costs for privately financed improvements but can also draw scrutiny from labor stakeholders; at the meeting staff emphasized that the club would fund the improvements and the city would charge a nominal rent and not pay for the work.
Next steps: staff will carry the amendment to council for final approval; the commission received the informational briefing and had no additional questions that would change staff’s recommendation.
