Resident asks Palm Springs Airport to explore a Coachella Valley compassionate travel program

During public comment, resident and concerned citizen Prema (Prima) Walker asked the commission to direct staff to research creating a Coachella Valley compassionate travel program and to document the economic contribution of airlines that operate at PSP.

Walker urged the commission to ask airlines doing business at PSP to contribute financially to a regional compassion fund, reserve a set number of no‑cost tickets annually for verified emergencies, train frontline staff to treat grieving passengers with dignity, and publicize access in multiple languages to minimize burden on families. She described incidents where last‑minute ticket costs prevented grieving families from attending funerals and said most major carriers have eliminated bereavement fares.

Staff thanked Walker for the suggestion; the commission did not adopt a formal motion during the meeting but acknowledged the request and indicated staff would follow up with contact information and that the commission could consider putting the item on a future agenda for further study.

Excerpts from Walker’s request included a call to "put a number on what this valley has given to these airlines, then ask them what they are willing to give back," and the recommendation to make emergency travel assistance easy to access for families without administrative burden.
