Surry County proclaims National Library Week as Mount Airy library reports rising patronage

The Surry County Board of Commissioners read a proclamation recognizing National Library Week and heard public praise for the renovated Mount Airy Public Library during its April 20 meeting in Dobson.
The Board’s proclamation declares April 19–25, 2026 as National Library Week and designates April 21 as National Library Workers Day and April 26 as National Librarian Day. Chairman Bill Goins read the proclamation aloud and thanked library staff in attendance.
Polly Long, Workforce Initiative Coordinator for Mount Airy City Schools, told the Board that more than 500 Mount Airy students recently visited the library, receiving tours, a story from Branch Manager Rana Southern, library cards and a takeaway book. Hattie Brintle, a member of the Mount Airy Library Advisory Board, said the renovated Mount Airy Public Library had welcomed 13,358 patrons year-to-date through April 20 and that 16,965 items had been checked out this year.
Chairman Goins thanked the library staff present and encouraged residents to visit their local libraries during the week the Board proclaimed.
