Surry County commissioners approve consent agenda including waste-hauler franchise and grant application

The Surry County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a multi-item consent agenda at its April 20 meeting in Dobson, county staff said.

County Manager Chris Knopf reviewed the consent items before the Board vote. The package included routine tax department adjustments — total releases of $3,046.75 and refunds of $2,498.98 — NCVTS tag and tax refunds of $2,543.55, discoveries of $4,776.00 in real and personal property, and EMS-related additions of $75,374.53 with collections of $23,951.76 for the month ending March 31, 2026.

The Board approved a Waste Haulers Non‑Exclusive Franchise with Carolina Hauling and Junk Removal, and authorized Jamie Edwards, director of the Surry County Office of Substance Abuse Recovery, to apply for the BJA FY 2025 Adult Treatment Court Enhancement Grant. The grant application was accompanied by a letter of support from Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Angela Puckett, as noted in the staff packet.

Also approved were the FY27 Fire Funding Matrix and an extension of the contract with the Town of Dobson for fire protection services within town limits, and a renewal of a lease for the Dockery property at 303 N. White Street to be used by the sheriff’s office for one year (Feb. 17, 2026–Feb. 16, 2027). The Board also authorized contracting with Campbell Law Group to provide legal services to the Department of Social Services.

All motions on the consent items passed by unanimous vote.
