At its May 18 meeting the Surry County Board of Commissioners approved a consent agenda and several routine and programmatic actions, and after closed session announced a deadline for volunteer fire departments to submit contracts for inclusion in the FY26-27 budget.
The Board unanimously approved consent items that included tax releases for the month ending April 30, 2026 in the amount of $1,934.75 and refunds totaling $3,793.57; NCVTS tag and tax refunds of $3,793.57; real and personal property discoveries of $4,816.91; motor vehicle discoveries of $47.12; EMS/EMD/EMS-MC additions of $51,322.70, collections of $23,436.05 and refunds of $614.77. The Board also approved awarding badges and service weapons upon retirement to Chief Deputy Larry Douglas Lowe, Detective Donald Gray Blizard Jr., and Lieutenant Chad Leon Hutchens and authorized EMS to apply for and accept, if awarded, a Rural Health Transformation Grant for the Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) program.
The Board approved a request from Parks and Recreation to waive all associated fees for a Cal Ripken League 9U Western North Carolina State Championship tournament to take place at Fisher River Park June 23–30, 2026. The Board adopted a resolution under N.C.G.S. § 160A-280 to convey two EZ-IO Power Drivers and four King Vision Laryngoscopes to Surry Community College for educational use.
The Board accepted an offer of $4,000 from Kent Collins for surplus property at 150 Bourbon Trail, Mount Airy, after an upset-bid period closed with no additional offers. The Board also reappointed members to several boards and commissions.
After returning from closed session, the Board voted unanimously to announce a May 29, 2026 deadline for all volunteer fire departments to submit contracts to be included in the FY26-27 budget and said the County would mail and deliver letters to departments with outstanding agreements.
