Commission reports 274 trees planted so far; volunteers, bulb-planting and a July 25 nursery day planned

The Mount Vernon Shade Tree Commission updated members on planting progress, volunteer needs and several community projects, reporting that about 274 trees have been planted so far this year toward an approximate goal of 470.

Members discussed volunteer-led efforts downtown and a proposal from Experience Mount Vernon to plant bulbs on Main Street this fall to add seasonal color. One member said Experience Mount Vernon had tested decorative containers downtown and that the group plans to plant bulbs with help from Kenyon High School volunteers; the commission discussed making a small cash contribution or donating bulbs to support the effort.

Commissioners also discussed concerns about deer browsing damaging newly planted trees and proposed buying 4-foot protective fencing rolls and stakes for volunteer plantings. Members said some donated tree-protection cages previously supplied by the parks department had gone missing; about 20 cages were reported lost after they were left in the field and later could not be found.

Staff reminded the commission that the city maintains an application process for tree maintenance requests in the public right of way and that the streets/parks department handles cleanup when trees fall into the street. The commission scheduled a West End tree-nursery workday for July 25 at 9 a.m., at a small city-owned plot off Adams Street, and discussed equipment, seasonal staffing and publicity to support nursery operations and replacement-tree distributions.

Next steps include confirming a plan and any modest contribution for the bulb project, purchasing protective fencing and locating replacement cages for volunteer plantings, and continuing outreach to target neighborhoods for fall plantings.
