Union City moves ahead with Broadband Ready Communities application

Union City Borough Council voted July 9 to proceed with the public process and a resolution to apply for the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG) Broadband Ready Communities designation.
Borough staff reported the designation would authorize EACOG to serve as the borough’s municipal broadband champion and create opportunities for additional internet service providers to offer broadband options in the borough. Councilor Kerns moved to proceed with the public meeting and resolution and Councilor Joyce seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
Council members noted that the borough’s permitting requirements already align with the program’s recommendations. The council set the public meeting requirement in motion so residents and ISPs can provide input to the application process.
The borough manager and solicitor will coordinate the public meeting and prepare the resolution for a future meeting where council action will be recorded formally.
