Suffern Central board honors state‑champion 4x400 relay team and approves consent agenda

Suffern, N.Y. — The Suffern Central School District Board of Education on Wednesday honored the boys 4x400 relay team for winning the New York State Public High School championship and approved routine consent‑agenda items by voice vote.
Superintendent Dr. Gunderson introduced the celebration and said the district was “incredibly excited and proud” of the athletes’ season. He invited coach Steve Pashley to the podium; Pashley described the team’s preparation, sacrifices and goals, saying, “After seeing them run last year, they came in third. They put in some extra time, the extra effort, the gym sessions — they started making some really tough choices.”
Pashley listed the relay’s accomplishments, saying the quartet set a new school and county record, won the state outdoor federation and class title and posted a championship time reported in the meeting as 3:14.79. He added the team also qualified for state in the 4x1 and set school bests in other events. “They worked out as hard as I’ve ever seen a group of kids work,” Pashley said.
Miss Lee Weber, introduced by the superintendent as a former assistant superintendent of instruction and a district liaison for the team, noted that state Senator Bill Weber was unable to attend but had supported the athletes. “I am just so grateful to have had the opportunity to watch you run,” she said, praising coaches, parents and the community.
Board members congratulated the athletes and coaches during general comments. Board member Mr. Shapiro noted the semifinal record and said, “This is really some team,” and other members thanked coaches and district physical‑education staff for long‑term development that produced the championship.
On business matters, the board approved the minutes of the June 16 regular meeting after a motion by Mr. Frasier and a second from Mr. Andert; the motion passed on a voice vote with no opposition. Later the board called a consent agenda covering action items 2.01–2.19; Mr. Donnelly moved, Mr. Shapiro seconded, and the consent agenda passed by voice vote with no opposition recorded.
Public participation periods on action items and general district business produced no speakers. The board set its next meeting for Tuesday, July 21 in Hillburn at 7:30 p.m. and adjourned after a motion by Mr. Frasier and a second by Mr. Donnelly.
The meeting record noted one absence: Miss Jennifer Hajj was not present.
