A town official responded that state law requires public access to the water, so the town cannot close the boat launch during swim lessons.
Board members and residents also discussed parking behavior around the launch and beach. Residents said trailers and boats sometimes occupy spaces nearest the beach, reducing public parking and potentially blocking emergency access. The board reiterated an informal practice of asking launch users to park on one side of the road so emergency vehicles can pass and agreed to ask staff to clarify signage and routine enforcement.
Trash and facility upkeep were also raised. Residents requested that trash cans at the beach be lined with contractor bags and that an extra bin be placed near the parking/launch area during lessons to reduce odor and litter. Public works staff said the porta-potties and beach trash are serviced weekly; members discussed options to anchor units and adjust placement to reduce tipping during storms.
Swim-lesson logistics emerged as a staffing concern. Lessons are scheduled roughly 12:30–6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays for several weeks, and lesson organizers have requested that a beach attendant be present for the entire lesson period. One new participant said covering the full shift would leave them with limited time for other duties; board members suggested splitting hours between volunteers or shifting coverage so attendants are present during peak lesson hours.
Board members asked staff to follow up with the person who drafted the parking notice, to confirm which uses require a beach pass, and to prepare recommendation options on signage and staffing before the next meeting. The board did not take a formal vote on policy changes during the session.
