Police report single‑fatality plane crash near skyline trail; county leads recovery

Willard — Police Chief Theron Fielding informed the City Council on June 25 that a small plane crashed on the west side of the mountain near the skyline trail above McGuire’s pit, at roughly 9,000 feet elevation, resulting in one fatality.
Chief Fielding said the pilot appeared to have been a student pilot on a solo flight from Salt Lake City to Idaho Falls. A UPS helicopter assisted an overnight search and confirmed the crash area; recovery operations were carried out the next day by county and UPS personnel. Chief Fielding said the crash fell within county jurisdiction.
Mayor Travis Mote thanked Councilmember Jordan Hulsey for coordinating the city’s emergency notification text system, which was used in the incident response.
