Eagle Lake council approves playground, contractor payment and schedules franchise hearing; denies pool compensation

At its June 1 meeting, the Eagle Lake City Council approved several routine and policy items affecting parks, streets and utility projects.
Park board recommendation: The council authorized purchase of the Karoo Lookout Play System from Pro Playgrounds in the "North" color scheme at a cost of $80,999, with funds set aside in the 2026 park budget. Administrator Jennifer Bromeland said installation could begin late summer or extend into the fall depending on scheduling and product availability.
Street and utility payment: The council approved Contractor’s Application for Payment No. 1 in the amount of $497,713.44 for the 2026 Street and Utility Improvements Project after engineer Brian Sarff reviewed the work and recommended approval.
Special assessments: Staff advised residents that Blue Earth County will accept certification of assessments for collection beginning in 2027 provided certification is submitted by Nov. 30, 2026. The council agreed to accept partial and full payments through the City up until Nov. 1, 2026; after county certification, partial payments will no longer be accepted.
Franchise agreement: Administrator Bromeland said CenterPoint Energy’s franchise agreement expires Oct. 2, 2026; the council scheduled a public hearing on July 6 to consider repeal of the existing ordinance and adoption of a new franchise agreement ordinance.
Pool liner reimbursement request: A resident requested compensation for rust staining on a pool liner allegedly caused by hard water at 429 LeSueur Avenue. Council discussion noted hard water and the need for chemical treatment and the council declined compensation to avoid opening the door to similar claims.
Traffic safety: Yaeger Bus Company requested the council consider a four-way stop at 211th Street and Maple Lane after a youth was struck near the intersection. The council directed staff to move speed signs, install speed trailers, work with bus companies and review concerns in the fall before school starts; Blue Earth County’s liaison said a bus stop was added by another carrier after the incident.
Planning internship: The council authorized hiring Collins Cherus as a planning intern at $12 per hour for up to 225 hours (not to exceed $1,700).
The council handled these items and adjourned at 7:54 p.m.
