Council approves removal of ash tree at 317 Maywood Avenue after arborist review

The City Council on June 1 approved removal of an ash tree in the front yard of 317 Maywood Avenue after an engineering firm’s arborist concluded the tree would "present a fall risk" following deep excavation that removed principal roots on its north side. Brian Sarff, engineer with Bolton & Menk, said the tree’s center is approximately eight feet outside the right-of-way and that excavation ended about 11 feet from the center, but the root damage prompted concern.
Property owner Denny Terrell asked why it took time to decide whether removal was necessary. Administrator Jennifer Bromeland said staff initially considered reviewing potentially impacted trees collectively in the fall but, after consulting Bolton & Menk and having a certified arborist inspect the tree, the matter was added to the council agenda. The city obtained pricing and accepted the lowest bid from Melchior Tree Service for $2,200; the company could remove the tree within a week, according to the council packet.
Council Member Garrett Steinberg moved to accept the Melchior Tree Service bid; the motion carried with Council Members Steinberg, Beth Rohrich, Nick Lewis and Mayor John Whitington voting in favor. The council also discussed tightening processes for addressing similar concerns in future projects.
