Council raises flat building permit fee and adjusts inspector revenue share

City officials told the council the last building inspection fee increase occurred in 2019 and proposed a modest rise to the flat permit fee and an adjustment to the revenue split with the inspector.
Dan Murphy and Ben Byron explained the city uses a mix of flat fees and valuation-based fees; the increase applies only to permits charged on a flat-fee basis, raising the flat fee from $65 to $75. Murphy and Byron also proposed changing the current 50/50 revenue split to a 55% inspector / 45% city split for fees collected on the flat-fee work. Mayor John Whitington requested a contract clause that would revert the split to 50/50 if a building permit review exceeded three weeks; Murphy agreed that review delays could be caused by incomplete applicant submissions and commercial reviews require longer turnaround times.
Council Member Beth Rohrich moved, seconded by Garrett Steinberg, to adopt the new building permit fee schedule. The motion carried unanimously, and Administrator Bromeland said the new fees would apply to permits issued beginning June 1, 2026.
