Superintendent outlines summer programs and 2026–27 calendar for Valley Stream UFSD 24

Dr. Caracus, superintendent of schools for Valley Stream Union Free School District 24, delivered a brief report outlining key dates and program changes ahead of the 2026–27 school year.
"Today officially starts the 2026–27 school year," Caracus said in opening remarks. He noted the district will be closed on July 3 for Independence Day and that summer school begins July 6 and runs through July 30. "We have extended our summer program to five hours," he said, adding that the extended school year program—introduced since last year—will run through Aug. 14.
Caracus said superintendent conference days for staff are scheduled for Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, and the first day of school for students is Sept. 2, 2026. He closed by wishing families a restful summer and reiterated program start dates and the district’s summer-school schedule, which includes the newly extended daily hours.
The superintendent’s remarks were given as part of the regular business meeting following the board’s reorganization session; there was no public comment or substantive debate recorded on program details during the meeting.
