Port Clinton — At its Jan. 13 meeting, the Port Clinton Tree Commission approved sending a North Branch Nursery estimate to the city’s Parks and Recreation department for submission as a Stenson Fund application to pay for six replacement trees in City Park.
Commissioner Jerry Tarolli moved to forward the nursery estimate; Commissioner Lisa Bodi seconded the motion, and it was recorded as approved by all commissioners present. The estimate covers tree purchase and planting for six trees — listed in the proposal as a Celebration Maple, Linden, Swamp White Oak, Autumn Blaze and American Sycamore — for a total of $3,240.00.
The request follows a report from Commissioner Larry Holman that a tree at 403 Fremont Rd had been removed and that North Branch Nursery had been contacted for a replacement estimate. During the meeting commissioners also recorded that a cherry tree on Clinton St had been removed by the property owner without commission approval; the minutes state the owner acted after receiving permission from a former Safety Service Director, Tracy Colston.
Stephanie Miller asked the commission to review the city ordinances (the record references the first three pages of the ordinances) to determine which tree species are appropriate for specific boulevards and how much space trees will have to grow over time. The commission did not record a detailed timeline or adoption of any amended planting rules at the meeting; the ordinance review was requested for future consideration.
Commissioners also noted that municipally supplied Tree City signs have not yet been installed and discussed preliminary plans for Arbor Day, including possible presentations by Girl Scout groups and participation by the PCHS or PCMS band.
