The Lafush Parish Council adopted an ordinance March 24 amending and reenacting Chapter 16 of the parish code to revise nuisance and abatement procedures and bring local practice into alignment with state statutes. Parish President Mitch Oro told the council the changes will streamline processes and include standard forms to speed responses to blight.
Vice Chair Perk asked whether disposition preferences (public auction, nonprofit transfer, or neighbor-next-door) would be vetted to ensure no preference is given; the president replied there is no preference and that the legal team and neighbors were consulted when drafting the changes. The ordinance also attaches a neighbor-next-door program to facilitate disposition when appropriate.
Council voted 9–0 to pass the ordinance. Administration credited Miss Kelly Tubes and the legal team for work moving the program out of what the president called the ‘‘dark ages’’ and cited ongoing efforts to ensure compliance and faster abatement timelines.
Next steps: administration will publish the standard forms and procedures and proceed with legal steps required for property disposition under the updated ordinance.
